A Local's Guide to Beating the Heat in Colorado Springs

Things To Do Iris Burton July 15, 2026

Every summer, Colorado Springs has that one stretch where the sun really means business.

This year has been a standout. The city broke a daily heat record back in June, and the whole state is coming off one of its warmest, driest stretches in recent memory.

Here is the thing about locals though. We do not just complain about the heat. We know exactly where to go.

Whether you are reading this in the middle of a headline making heat wave or just an ordinary hot afternoon somewhere down the road, this is my go to list for staying cool without ever losing that Colorado Springs charm.

Cool Drinks Worth the Drive

A good iced coffee can turn a rough afternoon into a good one.

Caffeinated Cow is a local favorite that pairs coffee with ice cream in the same stop, which honestly feels like cheating in the best way. Humble Coffee and Third Space Coffee are both the kind of spots where you settle in with a cold brew and stay longer than planned. Wayfinder Coffee Co is worth the drive if you want something a little more adventurous on the menu.

If coffee is not your thing, shaved ice is having a real moment in the Springs right now. Kokomo Sno Hawaiian Shave Ice and Jo's Hawaiian Ice both bring that fluffy, island style shave ice with real fruit flavors. Cotton Tail Shaved Ice and Colorado Sno Balls are easy stops if you are already out running errands and need a five minute reset.

Iris Insight 💡

I keep a mental list of five minute stops for exactly this reason. Some of the best days in Colorado Springs are not the planned outings, they are the little detours you make on the way to somewhere else.

Indoor Escapes That Do Not Feel Like a Backup Plan

Some of the best things to do in Colorado Springs happen to be air conditioned.

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College is home to a stunning Dale Chihuly glass installation, and it is the kind of place that makes you forget you only walked in to escape the heat. The Money Museum, run by the American Numismatic Association, is a surprisingly fascinating stop if you have never been. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame gives visitors and newcomers a real feel for the western heritage that shaped this city.

For families, the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum is a great way to spend an hour teaching kids about local history while staying completely out of the sun.

Shaded Patios for a Slower Afternoon

Sometimes the best move is not to hide from summer, it is to enjoy it from the shade.

Downtown Colorado Springs has no shortage of covered patios with misters and big umbrellas, perfect for a long lunch, a cold drink, and good conversation. It is a very Colorado Springs way to spend an afternoon, outside, but comfortable.

Iris Insight 💡

Clients moving here from hotter climates are always surprised by how mild our summers usually are. This kind of week is the exception, not the rule, and that is part of the story I love telling people who are still deciding if this city could be home.

Why This Kind of Day Still Sells the Springs

Even on the hottest days, Colorado Springs has a rhythm to it.

Locals know where to go, when to go, and how to make the heat feel like a minor inconvenience instead of a reason to stay inside all day. That kind of everyday knowledge is part of what makes living here so good.

So the next time the forecast climbs into the nineties, will you be the one heading for the nearest patio with a cold drink in hand, or discovering a new favorite spot on this list?

If you are thinking about making Colorado Springs home, hot days and all, I would love to help you find your place here. Reach out anytime.
